The Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (RHI)

What is the RHI and who is eligible?

The RHI provides financial support to non-domestic renewable heat generators and producers of biomethane. You basically get paid for generating heat energy that is used for a defined set of purposes.

The scheme, in phase one, is only providing support to the industrial, business and public sectors because they contribute a significant 38% of the UK’s carbon emissions. So for example, small businesses, hospitals and schools are currently eligible.

Support for phase one is guaranteed for 20 years.

Domestic support will be introduced in the second phase, which starts in 2012.

• Solar water heating
• Solar space heating
• Automated wood fuel heating systems (boilers and room heaters/stoves)
• Heat pumps (ground, air and water source)
• Photovotaic (PV) Solar Panels

What are the conditions for qualifying for the scheme?

One of the stipulations is that the products installed, and the installer themselves, must be Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited. This is necessary because it has been discovered in other countries that unsafe or poor quality installations can quickly undermine the sustainability of the renewable industries and it doesn’t do much for consumer confidence either. This way you are assured of quality.

Other than that, eligibility for RHI support is a matter for Ofgem, who administer the RHI scheme in accordance with the RHI Regulations.
